Apocalypse | Festive Trumpets | Education | CARNYX Brass
For the past eight years Mark has collaborated in many education projects around Scotland as part of the BBC SSO Learning scheme, firstly at St. Benedict’s primary school Easterhouse as trumpet teacher in group sessions, following on to work with Naheed Cruickshank in schools in the Inverness region and Glasgow’s east-end schools, working in a creative context with primary and secondary school children. The highlight of that era of school work was the collaboration between the BBC SSO, MIT in Massachussetts and violinist Joshua Bell in a concert at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, which featured Hyperscore a composition software program for work in schools; Hyperviolin demonstrated by Joshua Bell in a dazzling display of technique where violin and computer software mix; and Music Shapers and Beat Bugs designed by MIT for use in a classroom situation in a creative melodic and rhythmic context.

Since the appointment in 2003 by the BBC SSO of Learning Manager Jennifer Martin, with whom Mark has worked closely on almost all of her projects including Diverse Orchestra using Bartok’s Dance Suite as a starting point, in an eight-week composition project in Shawlands Academy for standard grade pupils which culminated in a pre concert event in Tramway, Glasgow on March 7th, 2004 whilst collaborating with the Hungarian folk group Muzsikas, Music in the Community students from the RSAMD, players from the BBC SSO and its conductor, Ilan Volkov.
Mark gave a performance workshop and masterclass to students and staff of the Music Conservatoire in Tailinn, Estonia in March 2004 as part of the BBC SSO tour of Estonia and Latvia.
