MARK O'KEEFFE - PROJECTS

Apocalypse | Festive Trumpets | Education | CARNYX Brass

The principal trumpet player of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Mark O'Keeffe travels through worlds where the trumpet as we know it today existed merely as a sea-shell, and through the ages discovers a world of trumpet-like sounds using a conch shell, a rams horn and even a drainpipe!

He invents a trumpet (Einstein-like!) with a hosepipe and a funnel. Travelling through time we discover how the trumpet idiom is developing, from the sound of the natural baroque trumpet, fanfares and battle calls, and the addition of the piston: he demonstrates the many styles of playing encompassing four centuries from baroque, to music in a theatrical setting commissioned by him, highlighting the importance of ‘live' performance.

In this creative workshop of approximately one hour duration, together we recreate the sounds of a South-American rainforest during which participants are encouraged to bring anything resembling a percussion or a brass instrument.

Educational value: Exploration of the history of the trumpet, its development and performance.

Material use: Improvisation and creative workshop.

Duration: Approximately one hour.

Preparation: Bring anything that resembles percussion or a brass instrument.

Set-up required: CD player, amplifier* and speaker* (*only for larger school halls).
